TARUS 2004 frequently asked questions

What is it? Tarus is the 5th Finnjamboree, a national jamboree of the Guides and Scouts of Finland. 12 000 Finnish Guides and Scouts with over 1000 participants from abroad have joined the jamboree.

Where is it? Tarus is held in Padasjoki, a commune with 3900 inhabitants. Padasjoki is located by lake Päijänne, ca 150 km from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. There are several smaller lakes surrounding the camp area.

When is it? The exact dates of the camp are from 28th July to 5th August 2004

For whom is it? Guides and Scouts 12 years and older all over the world are welcome. According to the safety regulations of the Guides and Scouts of Finland we require one adult leader (18 years or older) for every group of 10 Guides / Scouts. It is possible to join the jamboree with a group of leaders only. It is also possible to participate as a staff member.

Do we camp together with Finnish Guides and Scouts? All international groups will be linked with a Finnish Scout/Guide group. Each international group will have their own Finnish host group who will look after all their needs during the camp. Some groups will be able to arrange also Home Hospitality, but it is not guaranteed that the one and same group will be able to lodge all their guests.

Is there a possibility for Home Hospitality? Yes, Home Hospitality of 3-4 days will be arranged for all international guests willing to participate. As an alternative for Home Hospitality there will be a bus journey in Southern parts of Finland: Tour of Finland.

What kind of programme is there on the camp? Camp programme is based on Finnish patrol system. Traditional camping skills have an important part in the programme.

How much does it cost? The camp fee is 175 €. It covers programme, food and camp-style accommodation. Camping equipment and transportation in Finland are not included in the camp fee.

How do I get to the campsite? Own bus transportation for Tarus' participants will be arranged from Helsinki and Turku to the campsite. The price will be 10 - 20 euros/one way depending on how many bookings there are. Public buses cost 20 - 25 euros. The reception teams in Helsinki and Turku will welcome all foreign participants. They will also arrange temporary accommodation before and after the camp if needed.

Is it possible to come to or leave the camp a day earlier? If you registrate as a staff member, it is possible to participate only part-time. Then the camp fee is based on your stay: 25 €/day. It is though highly recommended that everybody participates for the whole camp.

If your travel plans require coming to Finland day or two before the camp starts, it is possible to get temporary accommodation at a Scout hall or local school. Our Reception teams in Helsinki and Turku will arrange accommodation and light supper/breakfast at a reasonable price.
